NEET UG Entrance Exam - Complete Guide for Medical Aspirants

What is the NEET UG Entrance Exam?
The National Testing Agency (NTA) in India runs the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) for students who want to study for a graduate degree in medicine (MBBS) or dentistry (BDS) in a government or private school in India.
This NEET UG entrance exam took the place of all the separate state or college entrance tests and created a common platform for everyone who wants to study medicine. There are 180 required multiple-choice questions in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in the exam. It is a pen-and-paper test.
Students have 3 hours to complete the exam. Every right answer scores 4 marks and every wrong answer gets deducted by 1 mark. NTA holds this examination every year in the month of May in various centers in India and abroad.
NEET UG Test Eligibility Criteria
Before you begin preparing, ensure that you fulfill the eligibility requirements. The age limit states that you must be at least 17 years old by December 31 of the year of admission. The good news, however, is that there is no upper age limit anymore. The exam can be taken at any age, so there are unlimited attempts.
Educational qualification requirements:
- You need to pass 12th standard with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as core subjects.
- Minimum marks required in 12th board results for General category students should be 50%.
- SC/ST students are required to secure 40% marks and OBC and PwBD candidates need to secure 45% marks.
- CBSE, state boards and equivalent boards are all acceptable including international boards such as Cambridge or IB.
Students in the 12th standard can also take the NEET UG exam. If you clear, then your admission will be confirmed after passing your 12th boards with required marks.
Details of NEET Exam Pattern
The NEET entrance exam has a pattern which you need to know well. The question paper consists of 180 multiple-choice compulsory questions equally distributed in three subjects.
Question-wise distribution of subjects:
- Physics: 45 questions from mechanics, electromagnetism, optics and thermodynamics.
- Chemistry: 45 questions from physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry.
- Biology: Botany section has 45 questions from plant physiology, genetics and ecology. The Zoology section contains 45 questions from human physiology, evolution, and cell biology.
Each question has four choices and answers are marked on an OMR sheet with a blue or black ballpoint pen. The total number of marks is 720, and every correct answer will earn you 4 marks. The negative marking system is a system where 1 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer.
NEET Examination Details: Syllabus Knowledge
The syllabus of NEET UG entrance exam is fully based on NCERT book contents of class 11 and 12.
Physics includes kinematics, laws of motion, gravitation, thermodynamics, optics and electrostatics.
Chemistry contains physical chemistry - thermodynamics, equilibrium, organic chemistry - hydrocarbons, biomolecules, and inorganic chemistry - periodic trends, coordination compounds.
Biology is the weightiest paper with 90 questions. Botany includes plant physiology, genetics and ecology while Zoology includes human physiology, evolution and cell biology. The official syllabus document of NTA is published every year at their website.
Application Procedure for NEET UG Test
The process of application for NEET UG examination is done in a completely online manner. Registration is usually opened in February about three months before the exam date. You must have a valid email ID and phone number and have scanned documents before you begin.
Visit the official NEET website of NTA at neet.nta.nic.in and click on the registration link. Fill in your basic information. The system creates a unique number and password for you to login with your application.
Documents you must upload:
- Recent passport size photograph (white background) after 1st January.
- Your black or blue ink signature on white paper is scanned properly.
- Class 10 passing certificate as age proof and identity proof.
- Category Certificate if you are SC/ST/OBC/EWS.
- PwBD certificate if applicable for benefits reserved for this category.
After uploading documents you choose your desired exam cities. Complete the payment either by using credit card, debit card, net banking or UPI.
The last step is a review of everything and submitting your application form. Download the confirmation page and save the soft copy and hard copy. This confirmation page is a proof of a successful registration.
